Q.
A.
Chairman:
Mr. Forrest:
Mr. Forrest, do you wish to cross-examine?
I would first ask permission to pass some photographs
around. (Photographs handed to the Commissioners and to Mr. Pudney):
Mr. Pudney, would you mind looking at these photographs ? As you
are the only official witness, I think, who is likely to be called
here who has actually been, on more than one occasion perhaps,
inside my office, will you tell me whether that gives a fair picture
of the state of affairs?
Yes.
If I say these photographs were taken three weeks ago, after the
worst was over, would you have any reason to doubt that?
No.
Certain of these pictures show crowds in the public enclosure.
Have you been in my office when you have seen even more in the
public enclosure than is shown there?
Yes.
Q.
Certain photographs show furniture.
Do you think the fixtures are
A.
particularly adequate for an office such as mine?
That is a matter on which I should not like to express an opinion.
You would have to work in an office to say whether the furniture
is adequate, and I know nothing about the detailed working of
your office.
.. Haxexy You have been round many Government offices; have you seen
other offices supplied with furniture of that type?
A.
It is not unusual, it is standard type furniture.
å
.
Would you call that dining table office furniture?
A.
That is not standard.
Q
A.
You first of all in your first visit though I am not sure
whether it was you or Mr. Barton objected to the position and
-
the accommodation given to the shroffs who at that time were quite
close to the public counter, and your department lent some furniture
for the shroffs?
Mr. Barton probably did, I don't remember.
